Library Routes Project Wiki

The Library Routes project (http://libraryroutesproject.wikkii.com) was created by three Information Professionals: jennie law, thewikiman and Woodsiegirl. It launched at the start of October, 2009, and is aimed at all types of Information Professionals and library workers. This wiki exists to document and link to all those who have blogged or otherwise written about their library roots (how they got into the profession) and their library routes (the jobs they've had and how their career has been shaped). NOTE: many of the librarians are in the UK.

The idea is to document either or both of your library roots
- how you got into the profession in the first place and what made you decide to do so
- and your library routes - the career path which has taken you to wherever you are today.

As well as being interesting of itself, it will also provide much needed information and context for those just entering the profession or wishing to do so.

Medpedia Project - Verified Medical Wiki

File this one under "Well if you can't beat 'em join em." The Medpedia Project is a collaboration between four leading medical schools, Harvard Medical School, Stanford School of Medicine, Medpedia Project ScreenUniversity of Michigan Medical School and the Berkeley School for Public Health.

The project is currently asking for content from health organizations, health professionals and others in the health care industry.

The goal is to provide open source but vetting medical information that would be available to all users around the globe.

According to the web site Medpedia will serve as "a catalog, database and learning tool about health, medicine and the body for doctors, scientists, policymakers, students and citizens that will improve medical literacy worldwide."

As always there are questions and the FAQ does answer some of mine. Unlike Wikipedia the editors will be selected and approved.

From the FAQ's:
Only M.D.s, Ph.D.s in a biomedical field and people with medical credentials will be allowed to contribute to Medpedia. Although only M.D.s can edit pages on Medpedia, anyone with an interest in health, medicine and the body is invited to be a Member of the Medpedia professional networking community.
The editors will not be paid, it is a voluntary participation. The site eventually hopes to support itself via text advertisements.

One of the questions that hasn't been answered in the FAQ's is whether alternative medical practices such as Acupuncture, Naturopathic medicine, Oriental Medicine practices and similar treatment options would be permitted on wiki.

Angioplasty Example
My List of Questions

A question I have is what is to stop a doctor who has an relationship with a pharmaceutical company to write content in favor of a company that might provide a gratuity to support his/her promotion of certain treatment options? What mechanism is in place to find out if the medical editor's hands have been greased with "special consideration?"

Would the medical community rat 'em out or would it be considered free speech? What would be the controls on the type of content a doctor could or could not post? For example, if the information is counter to what the American Medical Association accepts but the doctor has verifiable information would it be posted or blocked?

My other questions involve reading and comprehension accessibility by average users. What about health care literacy issues? Is it going to be accessible for vision and hearing impaired users? Multiple languages? Video, is there going to be video of certain procedures? Captioned video of course.

Forgive me, I'm greedy. But if this is going to be a global information repository it has a lot of work ahead of them. Some of that work has been paved by web sites like WebMD

What will Medpedia bring to the party and why would library folks use this instead of PubMed or go directly to some of the medical school library/resource web site?

I look forward to having another tool to help folks make health care decisions. I hope it is up to the challenge. Time will tell.

Just a quick reminder that there are a lot of resources on the Internet for library workers.

The LISWiki has information and tips on how to find a library job, the interview process and looking at the job offer.

There are also links to other resources you can check for employment opportunities.

LibraryCamp NYC - August 19, 2007

LibraryCamp NYC is happening on the campus of Baruch College in New York at the William and Anita Neuman Library.

I always seem to miss "BarCamp" type experiences. Either I'm too far away or have classes or don't have the cash to travel. I'd wish I could have know about this sooner. I would have loved to have go to an unstructured "BarCamp" experience for library folk.

I can't fret too much about it, they were totally booked by June and there is a long waiting list.

The "Camp" experience (Bar, Wine, Pod, Vlogger, etc.) is different from most conferences. The participants deciding what they want to talk or learn about, either on a wiki or on the actual day of the un-conference. It is a peer to peer sharing session. A part of the experience is the transparency of setting it up and the collaborative/volunteer effort that folks put into making it happen.

The reason I'm mentioning this is that often after a Camp experience there are photos, audio and video posted so that those that couldn't go get a taste of the event.

I hope it is true that the next LibraryCamp will be held in Southern California in 2008. I'm ready. Just give me the name of the wiki and I'll be good to go.

Participatory Enclyclopedia - Fan Based

Fan inspired wikis are nothing short of amazing works. I got lost in a few of them.

Memory Alpha is the wikipedia for the Star Trek television programs and the animated series.

The members of this wiki have decided that only material that originated from the television and animated series could be considered for inclusion on this wiki. This is referred to as the canon.

That means no fan based fiction, audio books, new characters derived from comic books, video games or graphic novels can be included. For that type of information you have to go to Memory Beta.

For Star Wars fans there is the fan based Wookieepedia http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Wookieepedia and the official Databank wiki at http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Databank

There are lessons that can be learned from these sites. First of all the community is very protective of the information that goes into the wiki. You don't want to be the person posting bad info. They will find you. Quickly. It would not be pretty.

The information has to be verified, meaning you have to state your source. There is a huge printed catalog of books that document Star Trek and Star Wars mythologies, ships, engineering, languages (Klingon) and costumes. Knowing it is not enough. You have to document your article or it might be removed for incompleteness.

Finally everybody has to play nice or you get kicked off the wiki. You won't find much troll or crude content. It is a protected place.

These are some of the lessons that I hope Wikipedia can convince its many users to adopt with the same level of vigilance.

Participatory Encyclopedia - WikiPhilly

WikiPhilly is about the city of Philadelphia, PA. It has articles about landmarks like the John Wannamaker building and the Wannamaker Eagle in the center of the department store.

It contains listings on the known restaurants and classic take-out joints to snag the ultimate cheese steak hoagies. Psst - it's Jim's on 4th and South. All others are pretenders to the thrown.

This has the potential of a great idea for other cities. What is the embedded knowledge that a local citizen takes for granted and a newbie needs to learn and quickly. This is one idea that I hope other citizens and cities begin to duplicate. http://wikiphilly.com

Participatory Enclyclopedia - Conservaedia

Conservapedia is an wiki encyclopedia with a political and Christian focus (their words, not mine.) According to the site, the page was begun in 2006 by home schooled students in New Jersey.

What was informative for me was the Conservapedia Commandments which are the guidelines for posting and participating in the forums.

To submit an article for Conservapedia the information must be true and verifiable. You must cite yours sources. The use of B.C.E. (Before the Common Era) is not allowed because they feel it ignores the historical basis for the uses of B.C and A.D.

There are definitions, articles and various types of information expressed. There was even a page were folks could point out where Conservapedia was not as balanced as it appears to present itself.

Conservapedia could have removed the questions and concerns. It will be up to them on how they responded and become a accurate representation of the views of the conservative landscape. http://www.conservapedia.com

Participatory Enclyclopedias - Planet Math

Planet Math is a encyclopedia for Mathematicians all others that are number bound. The goal of the project is to make mathematics more accessible.

Planet Math has its own classification system and articles submitted by those currently majoring in the field, have written their doctoral thesis or are just plan number junkies. There are free books to download on math topics, a math forum and a range of information starting with high school math moving into geometry, topology, number theory and discreet mathematics. Number crunchers, rejoice! http://planetmath.org

Participatory Enclyclopedias - Armeniapedia

Wikipedia may be the best known but it is not the only example of a group of people attempting to build an on-line knowledge bank of information. There are other fish in the sea.

Armeniapedia is an Armenian focused wiki. Starting in 2004 by Raffi Kojian the wiki covers history, culture, food and other topics with an Armenian or Armenian-American focus.

It invites contributions from the community. There is user generated information on this site in English and in the Armenian language however there is content from other sources that is citied and used by permission. http://www.ameniapedia.org
