The Howard Hughes Medical Institute was founded in 1953 by the aviator industrialist Howard R. Hughes. Its charter reads, in part: “The primary purpose and objective of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute shall be the promotion of human knowledge within the field of the basic sciences (principally the field of medical research and medical education) and the effective application thereof for the benefit of mankind.”Libraries, school teachers and individuals can request a copy of one of the publications, lessons or DVDs. Some of the items include:
- Seeing, Hearing and Smelling the World is available as a web page, an Adobe pdf file or in Spanish language version.
- Evolution - Constant Change and Common Thread DVD
- The New Virtual Lab - interactive CD that allows you to analyze bacteria, simulate diagnose heritable heart diseases or dissect a leech to explore its sensory system.
To learn more about the Institute you can download a copy of their quarterly publication. For those in classroom situations you can order more than one copy, or contact HHMI for more information.
How can they afford to do this? Mr. Hughes left a significant endowment for the institute. A $16.3 Billion dollar endowment.
